Expert Main Panel Upgrades

Main panel upgrades

  • Solar panel upgrades for existing solar systems are excellent ways to reduce electricity bills and make money with energy generation. We can either build in a more extensive solar power system or upgrade. Reasons for needing the main panel will be if you have an outdated Main Panel that voids current code or is simply undersized to add additional loads to the home, such as solar. We handle the solar and MPU all in-house. (This Is not referring to solar panels but the Main Electrical panel where all the breakers are located; Not all electrical main panels can have solar connected to them).
  • The main panel is the first point of contact for energy from the solar array. Your main panel can be upgraded in several ways to increase its overall efficiency. Removing the old existing Main Panel and replacing it with a new panel to bring it up to code and be more efficient. (you cant add more panels as there are variations of Main Panels-Overhead or Underground utility service lines that can dictate if we could upgrade the main panel, let’s say, from 100 amps to 200 amps. Usually, overhead services are easier to upgrade. If it is underground, we would keep the same amperage of the existing electrical main panel but add a more code-compliant replacement. Maybe delete this àOne way to do this is by adding more solar panels to your existing system. For example, if you have only one 200-watt solar panel installed on your roof, you can add another one so that both panels work together as a single 400-watt system.

Main Panel Upgrades FAQ

What is a main panel upgrade?

A main panel upgrade involves replacing your existing electrical service panel with a new one that can handle a higher electrical load. This is often necessary to accommodate additional electrical demands from new appliances, home renovations, or solar panel installations.

Why might I need a main panel upgrade?

You might need an upgrade if your current panel cannot support the electrical demands of new appliances, electric vehicles, solar power systems, or home expansions. It’s also necessary if your panel is outdated or if you frequently experience tripped breakers. If you have old electrical panels such as Zinsco, Federal Pacific, Stablok, and Sylvania, we strongly encourage an upgrade as many municipalities require due to fire hazard possibilities.

How do I know if I need a main panel upgrade?

Signs include frequently tripped circuit breakers, flickering lights, limited space for new circuits, or the installation of high-power appliances or systems like EV chargers or solar panels. Contact our team so we can assess your current panel and recommend an upgrade if needed.

What is involved in upgrading a main panel?

The process typically includes disconnecting the old panel, upgrading the electrical meter if necessary, installing the new panel, reconnecting circuits, and ensuring compliance with local electrical codes. This work requires a permit, inspection, and approval with PG&E or other utility for approvals.

How much does a main panel upgrade cost?

Costs can vary widely depending on the panel size, brand, labor, local permit fees, underground or overhead and any additional wiring or infrastructure changes needed. Main panel upgrades start at $4000.

How long does it take to complete a main panel upgrade?

The actual upgrade installation process usually takes a full day. However, the entire process, including obtaining permits and scheduling inspections, getting PG&E approvals can take several weeks to months depending on if the application is needed to go to engineering with PG&E.
